Sheets Laundry Club vs Earth Breeze

If you’re reading this article, you won’t be surprised to learn that switching to a zero-waste, cruelty-free, and plastic-free laundry detergent from a more conventional option reduces your impact on the environment while still letting you clean your clothes. Ingredients

Sheets Laundry Club only uses the bare essentials in its low-sudsing laundry detergent sheets. The main ingredients include natural essential oil fragrance (in the Fresh Linen variety only), naturally derived surfactants from coconut oil, water, and polyvinyl alcohol. These ingredients are safe for sensitive skin, although they could cause coconut-based allergic reactions or reactions to essential oils.

The company also claims the laundry detergent is safe for children’s skin. If you have sensitive skin, however, it could be worth going for the Free and Clear option because of its lack of a fragrance. The same goes for baby clothes—best to avoid essential oils on baby’s delicate skin.

As with all detergent strips, these contain polyvinyl alcohol. Polyvinyl alcohol is a bit of a mixed bag. It’s completely biodegradable, so it poses no risk to the environment through your wash water, unlike dangerous phosphates, parabens, and bleaches. It is, however, a petrochemical, a by-product of the petroleum industry. So while this ingredient doesn’t negate a product being eco-friendly, if you avoid petroleum products, you might be better off with a powdered eco-friendly detergent.

Performance

Sheets Laundry Club’s zero-waste laundry detergent sheets work effectively in hot or cold water and don’t leave any residue when used according to manufacturer instructions, no matter the water temperature. They also work well in all washing machines, including high-efficiency machines.

To get the best results possible, though, add your detergent sheet (or half a sheet for small loads) to the drum of the machine before adding your clothes so that the sheet dissolves in the water without sticking to clothes. Sheets recommends this method for a better cleaning performance, but it’s admittedly a little annoying. Most machines these days weigh the clothes first and lock after turning on the water, so adding the clothes later is not convenient or practical.

The overall performance is pretty, even getting rid of most stains and odors. You may need to pretreat super-tough stains, but that’s to be expected. The concentrated but gentle formula won’t damage or fade your clothes. In this, Sheets Laundry Club even outperforms many traditional detergents.

Eco-friendliness

Yes, Sheets Laundry Club is an eco-friendly alternative to traditional laundry detergent. According to the company’s CEO, this was one of the central tenets of the brand, and it still remains a unifying value. That’s why the detergent sheets don’t come in plastic containers, which you’d typically see with other detergents.

The plastic jugs traditional detergents come in typically end up in landfills or oceans, resulting in 275 tons of plastic waste ending up in waterways every year, where chemicals leach into the water and harm aquatic wildlife. Sheets aims to combat this by not using any plastic packaging.

The packaging is not only plastic free, but is also made from cardboard, which is biodegradable and compostable. Since the cardboard can be composted and the sheets contain only biodegradable ingredients, Sheets is a truly zero-waste laundry detergent.

Beyond being cruelty free and eco-friendly, it doesn’t seem as though Sheets Laundry Club does much for society or the environment. I couldn’t find anything online that suggests this, not even on the company’s official website. While it’s possible that Sheets Laundry Club is involved in such activity, it doesn’t advertise it at all. This is quite different from Earth Breeze, which goes out of its way to positively impact the planet and the society that inhabits it, in myriad ways.

Cost

A 50-sheet box of Sheets Laundry Club costs $19.99, which works out to $0.40 per load, making it more expensive than most other brands. If you decide on this detergent and want to save a little money, then I recommend going with the subscription.

Signing up for a subscription brings the price down by 15%, so you’ll end up paying $0.29 per load. If you want something that’s just as effective but you don’t want to pay quite so much, you might want to buy Earth Breeze, whose subscription price is $0.20 per load.

Product line

Sheets Laundry Club Laundry Detergent Sheets come in a scented and fragrance-free option, known as Fresh Linen and Free and Clear, respectively.

In addition to detergent strips, Sheets offers a wide range of eco-friendly and plastic-free products, spanning kitchen, personal care, and laundry products. Sheets offers over 30 household and personal products, too many to name here, but here are a few of its most popular products:

  • In-wash scent boosters: Get them here.
  • Dryer sheets: Get them here.
  • Stain fighter: Get it here.
  • Dishwasher detergent: Get it here.
  • Solid dish soap: Get it here.
  • Coconut coir scrubber: Get it here.
  • Floor cleaning sheets: Get them here.
  • Body deodorant: Get it here.
  • Shampoo bars: Get them here.
  • Body soap bars in various varieties: Get them here.
  • Exfoliating body scrub: Get it here.

While many of these products are in the laundry category, Sheets has more personal care products than Earth Breeze, which has none.

One fun thing about Sheets Laundry Club is that it offers multiple bundles for combining its products, including bundles for college students. However, it has so many bundle options that at some point one has to wonder if it’s just a marketing strategy.

A closer look at Earth Breeze

Pros

  • Low price
  • Gentle formula safe for sensitive skin and allergies
  • Cruelty free, eco-friendly, and vegan
  • Phosphate-free, bleach-free, and paraben-free ingredients
  • Good performance, even in an HE washing machine
  • Scented or fragrance-free option
  • Easy refund process and 100% satisfaction guarantee
  • Completely carbon neutral

Cons

  • Questionable ingredients

Ingredients

Earth Breeze Eco Sheets are eco-friendly, which the company emphasizes heavily in its marketing. Since Earth Breeze aims to be as gentle as possible, it includes only a few essential ingredients, cutting out the most harsh and dangerous chemicals. The scented option only has nine ingredients, while the fragrance-free has eight, far less than a standard liquid detergent.

While Eco Sheets shouldn’t be an issue if you have sensitive skin, just like Sheets Laundry Club, Eco Sheets do contain polyvinyl alcohol. Additionally, Eco Sheets contain a compound called polyethylene glycol, which in its pure form is generally considered safe. However, polyethylene glycol can contain impurities, specifically ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane, which can pose serious risk. Still, it’s approved by the FDA, so you probably don’t need to worry about it. It wouldn’t hurt if Earth Breeze removed this ingredient, though. Others have managed without it, so I assume Earth Breeze laundry strips could too.

Performance

Earth Breeze cleans effectively in hot or cold water and dissolves quite easily. The cleaning power is quite impressive given the gentle ingredients.

Earth Breeze works well in all types of washing machines, even high-efficiency ones. You can use the laundry sheets in a front-loading or top-loading machine. When using these, just as with Sheets, it’s best to add the Earth Breeze sheet before adding your clothes to increase the contact time and cleaning potential. Again, because of the way washing machines function for low water use, this method is not practical. That being said, it does not seem that adding Earth Breeze Eco Sheets on top of clothes before turning on the washer affects the cleaning performance at all. They still dissolve well most of the time.

Earth Breeze is also effective for hand-washing and safe for delicate fabrics. Whether you’re hand-washing or adding the laundry strips to a machine, there shouldn’t be any stains or odors left behind. For more persistent stains, you might need to use an extra sheet or pretreatment, but one Earth Breeze laundry sheet should be enough for most loads.

Eco-friendliness

Overall, Earth Breeze is an eco-friendly company and adopts multiple business practices to make it as sustainable as possible, from manufacturing and shipping to how it cleans clothes. Earth Breeze has earned multiple awards for this effort, with the Organic Consumers Association and Green America recognizing the laundry detergent brand for its work.

The company donates 1% of its revenue to environmental causes through Earth Breeze’s partnership with 1% for the Planet. As a result, Earth Breeze does more for the environment than traditional laundry detergent companies and most, if not all, eco-friendly brands.

The brand also partners with We Are Neutral, through which Earth Breeze offsets the carbon emissions generated through its production, manufacturing, and shipping. It does this by encouraging and participating in tree plantings and ocean cleanups. Thanks to Earth Breeze’s commitment to these initiatives, it’s a completely carbon neutral brand, meaning that it contributes no carbon emissions.

Earth Breeze also helps in other ways. For example, laundry detergent is a much-needed item in homeless shelters, women’s shelters, veteran’s organizations, and disaster relief centers, but it’s often up to these organizations to buy them. Earth Breeze helps such groups dedicate their vital funds to other essential areas by donating 10 laundry sheets to charity with each purchase.

Since launching the initiative in November 2020, Earth Breeze has donated over 10,000 of its Eco Sheets to people who need it the most.

By supporting Earth Breeze you are supporting all of these initiatives. It’s quite impressive, actually.

Cost

Rather than outright price, the cost of a laundry detergent is determined by its price per load. Earth Breeze Eco Sheets come in at $0.33 per wash, with a one-time purchase of $20 getting you 60 loads. The price of this 30-sheet pack comes down with a subscription deal, bringing it to $0.20 per load. With the subscription, you can set up your Earth Breeze detergent delivery for automatic deliveries, every two weeks, every month, or every four months. Alternatively, you can buy 720 loads at once and receive a further discount.

Compared to a regular detergent, this is an exceptional price and makes Earth Breeze one of the most affordable options on the market.

What’s more is that Earth Breeze offers a money-back guarantee. If you’re not satisfied you can send the product back for a full refund.

Product line

Earth Breeze originally offered only one eco-friendly and cruelty-free product, the Earth Breeze Eco Sheets laundry detergent strips. Coming in a scented option and a fragrance-free option, both products are equally effective at cleaning clothes. You can order these sheets in a pack of 30, which cleans 60 loads, or a 12-pack of 30, which lasts for 720 loads.

Earth Breeze ships its laundry sheets in plastic-free packaging, a small compostable cardboard sleeve that reduces the amount of plastic waste sent to fester in landfills and pollute the air, soil, and water. Instead, this non-plastic packaging is completely made out of compostable cardboard.

After firmly establishing its laundry detergent in the eco-friendly market, Earth Breeze finally introduced a larger range of household cleaning products. Here are the newest cleaning products you can get from Earth Breeze:

  • The Hope Cloth paper towel replacement
  • Power Pebbles dishwasher tablets
  • Regeneration Tote Bag
  • Multi Surface Cleaners

It’s nice that Earth Breeze has introduced more products, but it’s still a smaller product line than other eco-friendly brands.

Earth Breeze has the same 4.5 out of 5 rating with over 26,000 reviews. Most of the reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Some commented that it doesn’t remove tough stains, but without harsh chemicals and bleaches, tough stains need a pretreatment. It’s not a surprise.

Sheets vs Earth Breeze: Wrapping it up

It’s finally time to figure out what’s best when it comes to the Earth Breeze vs Sheets Laundry Club debate. After going through all of the pros and cons, I can safely say that Earth Breeze is the better choice.

It’s a zero-waste option that’s also much more budget-friendly. The price per load is noticeably lower than Sheets Laundry Club. That doesn’t mean compromising on performance, as it’ll be just as effective—if not more so—than a traditional alternative.

If you have sensitive skin, the fragrance-free option is effective and won’t cause any rash or other reactions.

Then there’s the fact Earth Breeze does much more for society and the environment than Sheets. It’s a socially responsible company that actually cares—and does the work. While it lacks the same product range as Sheets Laundry Club, the affordable price and dedication to giving back to society and the environment make it stand out.

I found Earth Breeze to be much more effective if you’re looking for a plastic-free and zero-waste laundry detergent that effectively cleans clothes and helps protect the planet. If you want to get rid of toxic and harmful chemicals from your laundry room, it’s the more appealing choice.
